The Diplomatic Academy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has been functioning for over 20 years. However, nowadays there is an urgent need to overhaul its mission, functions and the very nature of the educational process.
Foreign policy professionals in charge of international relations at the Presidential Administration of Ukraine, the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Verkhovna Rada Secretariat, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomatic missions of Ukraine abroad are well aware of the challenges the diplomatic service of Ukraine has been facing over the last years of the treacherous war waged not only by military means but in mass media, social networks, offices of international organizations and high-ranking officials all over the world.
Ukraine is standing up to the enemy whose tanks, missiles and military aircraft outnumber those of the Ukrainian army, the enemy who possesses nuclear weapons and spends billions of dollars on fake media, scores of internet trolls, bribing journalists and political experts, supporting right-wing and populist politicians. In some countries, the staff of the Russian embassies significantly exceed the staff working at the Ukrainian embassies.
In such circumstances, Ukraine’s response cannot be symmetrical. To defeat the enemy, it is necessary to ensure the efficient work of diplomatic service, considerably raise the quality of training provided for the diplomatic staff, enhance their knowledge and skills, improve their proficiency in foreign languages and communication technologies. The reformed Diplomatic Academy is working towards achieving this goal.
The Hennadii Udovenko Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine is no longer a ordinary classical educational establishment. It now performs its direct functions – professional development of diplomats. The Academy trainees are diplomatic and civil servants from the MFA, the Presidential Administration of Ukraine, the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Verkhovna Rada Secretariat, other Ministries and Government Agencies. We are now launching a modern system of professional development training, teaching and assessing foreign languages competence, specialized training programs and tailor-made courses for those who have decided to pursue a diplomatic career, who have been posted abroad, who have come back from a foreign mission, who are seeking to take up a high post in the MFA head office or a diplomatic mission.
The doors of the Academy are open to those who are interested in foreign policy and care about the future of Ukraine, its security and development. Our values are expressed in the motto once formulated by Hennadii Udovenko as 3P’s – Professionalism, Probity, Patriotism.
