Magnificent century. Erdogan

A lively intellectual discussion devoted to the specifics of political regime in Turkey took place during the second meeting of the Student Diplomatic Laboratory on May 10, 2018 in the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine.

Who is Mr. Erdogan? Is he a state man, who creates a strong and capable Turkey, or just one more authoritative leader, who manages to convince others that his ambitions coincides with state interests? What if the reality is more complicated and we are helplessly mistaken in our attempts to deal with it in a black&white manner? The discussion dedicated to Erdogan’s presidency made us ask, “What is the future of Turkey after Erdogan?”

We had the pleasure of listening to reports prepared by students: Denys Tereshchenko (Political Science Students’ Association of the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”) “From a democrat to a sultan: pathogenesis of erdoganism”. Mykhaylo Petrov (Political Club of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv) “The history of the rise and fall of the military in Turkey”. The Director of the Academy, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Sergiy Korsunsky proposed a somewhat different vision of president Erdogan and his role in Turkish state building in the second part of the meeting. Comparing Turkish development in the temporal perspective, Dr. Sergiy Korsunsky provoked the considerable debate so the audience had to stand on their own and to try to convince the opposite site with a diplomatic care and charm.

Viktoriia Khalanchuk, an analyst of the Centre for International Studies, moderated the meeting.
