In memory of Hennadii Udovenko

Today marks the 93th anniversary of the birth of Hennadii Udovenko, a prominent Ukrainian diplomat whose name is given to the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine.

In different years, he headed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the People’s Movement of Ukraine party. He is the only Ukrainian to have presided over a session of the UN General Assembly, chaired the UN Security Council, and later served as Vice President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

Colleagues at the United Nations called Hennadii Udovenko Mister Chiefman. Taras Chornovil described him in one of his interviews:

He was extremely tactful and wise. He never allowed himself to raise his voice. For his self-control in any situation, he was kindly called Udav Yosypovych behind his back.
