5-6 October 2026, the Professional Training Centre delivered a two-day online course, “Euro-Atlantic Cooperation and the Role of the United States in Transatlantic Security and Integration Processes”, for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and representatives of central executive authorities.

The course was delivered by Louis Wierenga, Lecturer in International Relations at the Baltic Defence College. Over the two days, participants examined key developments in the contemporary global and Euro-Atlantic security environment, the transformation of Europe’s security architecture, the evolution of transatlantic cooperation, and the role of the United States in European security. Particular attention was given to the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine on the European security order and to the ways in which NATO, the European Union, the United States and European countries are adapting to emerging security challenges.

During the first day, participants had the opportunity to discuss the main trends shaping the current security environment, including intensifying competition among major global powers, the growing interconnection between military, economic, technological and societal security, the changing strategic roles of NATO and the EU, and the further development of cooperation between the two organisations. The session also addressed efforts to strengthen defence capabilities, resilience and deterrence in Europe, as well as the growing importance of NATO’s Eastern and Northern Flanks and the increasingly close links between Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security.

The second day focused on the development of transatlantic relations, the role of the United States in European security, and Ukraine’s place in the emerging European security architecture. Participants considered the evolution of US strategic priorities, changes in relations between the United States and Europe, burden-sharing in the field of defence, US policy towards NATO, Russia and Ukraine, as well as the development of Ukraine’s relations with NATO and the European Union since 2014 and, in particular, following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

Particular attention was also devoted to Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration, including its political, institutional, defence and security dimensions, Ukraine’s role in the future European security order, and possible scenarios for the further development of Euro-Atlantic cooperation. Participants also discussed how changes in the international system are affecting Ukraine’s foreign and security policy and how Ukraine can strengthen its position amid the ongoing transformation of the Euro-Atlantic security architecture.
