On 22 April, the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine hosted a presentation of the Ukrainian translation of the book “Europe and the Emerging New Global Order: Rethinking Europe's Security Framework", authored by a number of leading experts in the fields of defense and international relations. The publication explores how European politics and economics should adapt to new security challenges amid sweeping geopolitical shifts worldwide.

The presentation featured Jochen M. Richter, one of the book’s editors and Chair of the Global Security Forum at The Diplomatic Council; a senior expert on EU and global security issues, a former official of the European Commission and the European Parliament, and Oleksandr Merezhko — Doctor of Law, Chair of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation.

The event was also attended by Ukrainian diplomats, parliamentarians, scholars, experts, and proactive young people.

Ihor Ostash, Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine, opened the event with a welcoming address, emphasizing the relevance of the book’s subject matter in the context of war and global transformations:

“This work is of paramount importance for everyone who reflects on the future of Europe. In a rapidly changing world, the book calls for the formation of a capable, resilient, and self-assured Europe.”

The Academy’s director specifically highlighted the wide range of issues covered in the book and their direct relevance to contemporary security challenges, namely: political decisions and military aspects, economic resilience, energy security, hybrid threats, climate risks, and the reform of the international order.

Ihor Ostash placed particular emphasis on the practical value of the publication for Ukraine and all of Europe.

“For Ukraine, which has been resisting Russian aggression for thirteen years now, these issues have not only theoretical but also deeply practical significance. For Europe today, it is critically important to rethink the security architecture and strengthen its ability to act as a single, responsible global actor.”

During the presentation, the publication’s editor, Jochen M. Richter, introduced the key ideas of the book “Europe and the Emerging New World Order,” which brings together the perspectives of 21 authors from various countries on the future of European and global security.

In his speech, the expert highlighted Ukraine’s unique experience in the field of resilience and defense innovation, emphasizing that Ukraine has much to teach Europe today. He also discussed the prospects for Ukraine’s European integration, which, according to the speaker, requires not only reforms on the Ukrainian side but also profound changes within the European Union itself.

Member of Parliament of Ukraine Oleksandr Merezhko highlighted the uniqueness of the publication, which stands out for its comprehensiveness and serves as “a kind of encyclopedia of the new global reality.” He specifically emphasized Ukraine’s role in shaping a new world order based on the principles of international law, noting that Ukraine’s struggle against russia’s aggression is simultaneously a struggle to preserve the international legal order.

The event concluded with an open discussion and a joint search for answers to today’s security challenges.

We express our sincere gratitude to Ihor Kohut for his assistance in organizing this important intellectual event.

The book “Europe and the Emerging New World Order: Rethinking Europe’s Security System” is available for review in the library collection of the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine.
