Online seminar “International Security Issues in the Context of Contemporary Geopolitical Trends, Challenges, and New Technological Opportunities”
29 April 2026 15:45

On 27–28 April, the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine held an online seminar titled “International Security Issues in the Context of Contemporary Geopolitical Trends, Challenges, and New Technological Opportunities.”

The course provided participants with a comprehensive overview of the role of remotely piloted aircraft (drones) in modern politics and security. The program combined a historical analysis of drone development with an examination of the latest trends in their use in both military and civilian spheres. A separate part of the course was devoted to the future of drones in the context of contemporary conflicts from the war in Ukraine to the escalation around Iran and their impact on global security.

On 29 April, an analysis of the current geopolitical situation was presented, focusing on the United States’ decision to halt negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program and shift to direct military confrontation in cooperation with Israel. The military actions are being carried out without approval from the U.S. Congress and without a mandate from the United Nations Security Council, while their strategic objectives remain unclear.

The presentation within the course focused on three key areas: the domestic situation in Iran and its role in the region; relations between Iran, the United States, and Israel; as well as the broader implications of the war for the international system.

The seminar was led by leading experts :

  • Dr. Toni Cerkez, Lecturer of International Relations at Tallinn University, PhD in International Politics (Aberystwyth University)
  • Wolfgang Muhlberger, Senior Advisor for MENA& Strategy at CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, MSc in International Economics (Vienna Business University)
