On August 17-20, a seminar on current issues of international humanitarian law was held at the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine. Diplomatic staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and civil servants of central executive bodies took part in the training course.

Associate Professor of International Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Tartu (Estonia) Rene Vark presented a comprehensive review of the legal regulation of armed conflicts and mechanisms for bringing international crimes to justice.

During the course, participants were introduced in detail to the foundations of international humanitarian law, its purpose and principles of application in armed conflicts. An important component of the seminar was the study of international legal mechanisms for prosecuting persons who violate the norms of international humanitarian law and commit international crimes. During the discussions, participants analyzed practical cases related to the ongoing aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which allowed combining theoretical knowledge with current challenges of our time.

Conducting such events contributes to improving the level of professional training of diplomats and civil servants and deepening their practical knowledge in the field of applying the norms of international humanitarian law in armed conflict.
